PO Box

A Post Office Box (PO Box) is the most popular solution for general use. Choose from a range of PO Box sizes and lease durations to suit your needs. And it’s not just for letters – it works for parcels delivered by Australia Post and StarTrack too.

Private Bag

A Private Bag is the best way to manage your mail if you live in a rural or remote area of Australia. Apply in-store only.

Run a business? You might prefer a GPO Box address or Locked Bag instead.

Apply online, or download and complete an application form, then take it to a participating Post Office. Don’t forget to bring the required ID.

Pricing and set-up

You can lease a box or bag for up to one year and then renew it annually. Please check at your individual PO Box location as PO Box sizes and availability may vary. You’ll also get a discount on your annual lease when you pay your renewal by 31 March each year (non-business customers only).

Our pro rata pricing runs from 1 April until 31 March the following year.

For new leases, you'll pay an establishment fee, and what's left of the annual pro rata price, depending on what month you take out your lease. The pro rata charge for each month is one twelfth of the annual fee.

Any lease that starts in February or March will include charges for a full year in addition to pro rata fees.

  • Establishment fee: $20 (includes 2 keys)
  • New lock:$32.
  • Extra keys: $14 per key.
  • Cancelling your box/bag: $35 (unused service fees exceeding $35 are refunded).
  • Reactivation fee: $28.Applies if you wish to re-lease your cancelled PO Box or Bag. You can reactivate your service between 1 and 31 May, provided your previous box or bag hasn't been leased to someone else.

When you take out a lease, you will need to purchase two mail bags for your Private Bag mail collection. One bag is for you to leave at your local Post Office for mail collection. When you collect the full mail bag to take home, you can swap it with the second empty bag.

Things to know

To lease a PO Box or Private Bag, here's the ID you'll need to provide us:

Online applications

You can use your driver's licence, Australian passport, or Australian visa (if you have a foreign passport).

Post Office applications

Proof of identity that shows your name, date of birth, residential address and signature (this can be your driver's licence or 2 other documents, such as a utility bill and bank statement).

PO Box renewal invoices are sent in February each year. There are a number of payment options including:

  • Online:
    • Credit card at this link just enter your invoice number and follow the prompts.
    • Credit card via yourMyPost Account. Just log in to your MyPost account and click 'alternative addresses'.
    • Credit card or Paypal account using Post Billpay. Please note: online payments are made through Post Billpay using biller code 0060. Renewals cannot be paid through BPAY.
  • In-person at a Post Office.
  • Over the phone via credit card. Call 13 18 16.

Want to extend your lease? You can do so for up to 5 years in advance either in-store or online at any time.

Pay renewal online

Parcel too big to fit in your PO Box? No problem. We’ll put it in one of our special PO boxes (they’re the ones with the red door) and leave the key in yours.6This service is called 24/7 Parcel Collection, and it’s available at more than 1000 of our PO Box sites. If the red door service isn’t available, we’ll leave you a card advising collection from your Post Office.

If you’re regularly shopping online but you aren’t often home to receive your letters and parcels, leasing a PO Box is a convenient, private and secure option.

Here’s how.

Step 1: Sign up to MyPost.

Go to the Australia Post PO Box website, click Apply online with MyPost, enter your details to sign up for MyPost.

Step 2: Select your PO Box location.

Scroll down and select lease, then enter your address, suburb or post code to find a convenient PO Box location for you.

Then select your PO Box size and number to finalise your lease.

Step 3: Start shopping.

When finalising your online purchase at the checkout, enter your PO Box number.

Step 4: Collect your parcel.

If you opted in to the Mail2Day notifications, you’ll get an email when your delivery arrives.

And if your parcel is too big to fit into your PO Box, you’ll get an Item Awaiting Collection card or a key to a red door PO Box, where your parcel will be deposited.

Simply use the key to open the red door PO Box within five business days of receiving your notification and return the key in the Key Return slot.

We’ll save you a trip by letting you know when there’s an item in your PO Box. This service is called Mail2Day, and you can subscribe to it for free.

When you're applying for a PO Box, you can subscribe to Mail2Day notifications using the same application form (4.13MB).

Individuals experiencing homelessness in Sydney

You may be eligible for free PO Box access for 12 months at participating Post Offices.

After 12 months you can choose whether you would like to continue to access the PO Box service as a paid service.

Victims of domestic violence

If you need help staying connected, you have the one-off option of free PO Box access for up to 23 months. In addition, we'll make sure your mail still gets to you with free mail redirection for up to 12 months.

If you need to continue your mail redirection for longer than the free service period, please note that applicable rates will apply.

How to apply:

You can apply in-person at any Post Office in Australia. Please make sure you bring the following documentation with you:

  • A PO Box form (4.13MB) – printed forms are also available from your local Post Office
  • Individual proof of identity
