World Of Warcraft: Dragonflight - Primal Storms Guide (2024)

World of Warcraft Dragonflight has had a substantial amount of content to do since its release, with Season One only adding more to the pot. On top of that, with Dragonflight being as alt-friendly as it is, it’s no surprise that the primary goal of some of the content added has been to make it easier to gear up your other characters.

One such system is the Primal Storms, and if that sounds familiar to you, that’s because it’s essentially a reimplementation of the same system from Dragonflight’s pre-patch event. So, if you’re looking for a quick and easy way to gear up some alts (among other things), then stick around for your guide to Primal Storms.

What Are Primal Storms?

World Of Warcraft: Dragonflight - Primal Storms Guide (1)

As mentioned in the intro, Primal Storms are pretty much a copy-paste of the Primal Storms event from Dragonflight’s pre-patch, though the timing is a bit different this time around.

Every three hours, elemental storms will appear – as either earth, wind, fire, or water-themed – in two of the four main zones on the Dragon lsles. They'll be marked on your map.

Enemies in the areas of the storms will be empowered with abilities that reflect whichever elemental storm is occurring, and Primalists of the corresponding element will also raid the area to assist them.

These storms will last for two hours, making it so there is one hour in between each event.

The two Primal Storms that occur at the same time in different zones will not always be the same elemental theme. More often than not, they won’t be.

While there is no set objective in each of these storms (though big rares will spawn occasionally), there is an infinitely grindable currency: Elemental Overflow. These drop from any and all mobs within the areas of the Primal Storms.

There is no limit to how much of this you can loot and carry, and it can be used to purchase gear and cosmetics from designated vendors for this event. This, along with the cosmetics and rarer items that can drop from any mob within the areas of the Primal Storms, will be addressed in the following sections.

Primal Storms Gear

There are two sets of gear and weapons that can be acquired through these events. First is the item level 359 gear (which is Heroic dungeon equivalent) that can be bought from Mythressa in Valdrakken with your Elemental Overflow currency. You can also buy item level 385 gear from Rethelshi (right next to Mythressa) with a much rarer and weekly capped currency: Storm Sigils.

Neither of these vendors sells jewelry (necks, rings) or trinkets.

Note that in order to purchase this 385 gear, you not only need a designated number of Storm Sigils but the corresponding Elemental Overflow 359 piece. For example, to buy the 385 belt, you need the 359 belt as well as five Storm Sigils. Here are the costs of the 359 pieces:

How To Obtain Storm Sigils

You can only obtain nine Storm Sigils per week. One is simply rewarded by completing a quest from Rethelshi (Storm Surge) which asks you to collect a small sum of Elemental Overflow. This is pretty easy business if you’re already farming the currency, just don’t forget to pick up the quest from him.

The last eight come from quest itemsthat have decently low drop chances. The mobs in each of the elemental Primal Storms have a small chance to drop a Primal Core:

  • Thunder Storm: Primal Air Core
  • Water Storm: Primal Water Core
  • Fire Storm: Primal Fire Core
  • Earth Storm: Primal Earth Core

Looting any one of these leads to you instantly accepting its corresponding quest, which asks you to return the Primal Core to Rethelshi. While he gives you two Storm Sigils for completing each of these, note that each Primal Core can only be looted once per week, allowing you to loot a total of four per week, totaling eight Storm Sigils per week.

Primal Storms Cosmetics

World Of Warcraft: Dragonflight - Primal Storms Guide (3)

First off, there are two companions and one mount you can buy from Mythressa:

Name

Cost

Description

Ghostflame

1,000 Elemental Overflow

A small water elemental companion with a ghostly appearance.

Stormie

1,000 Elemental Overflow

A baby storm proto-drake companion.

Stormhide Salamanther

2,000 Elemental Overflow

A salamanther mount.

Secondly, there are a few other things you can pick up by getting lucky and looting them off mobs in a Primal Storm area:

Drop Name

Drop Description

Design: Elemental Lariat

Jewelcrafting design for a necklace.

Formula: Illusion: Primal Air

Enchanter formula for a weapon illusion.

Formula: Illusion: Primal Earth

Enchanter formula for a weapon illusion.

Formula: Illusion: Primal Fire

Enchanter formula for a weapon illusion.

Formula: Illusion: Primal Frost

Enchanter formula for a weapon illusion.

Echo of the Heights

Air elemental companion.

Echo of the Depths

Water elemental companion.

Echo of the Inferno

Fire elemental companion.

Echo of the Cave

Earth elemental companion.

Each companion can only drop during its corresponding elemental invasion (for example, the Echo of the Air can only drop during Thunder Storms), and while they are Soulbound upon pick-up, they are cageable. As such, you can learn the companion, cage it, then sell it on the Auction House if you’re looking to make some gold.

There is one more thing you can pick up from the Primal Storms mobs: an heirloom trinket. This is the same heirloom trinket you were able to get during the Dragonflight pre-patch event: Unstable Elemental Confluence. That said, it’s not a simple one-time drop. Instead, you need to pick up four separate items, one from each elemental Primal Storm:

  • Dimmed Primeval Storm
  • Dimmed Primeval Water
  • Dimmed Primeval Fire
  • Dimmed Primeval Earth

Once all four of these are acquired, combine them to get your heirloom trinket. Being an heirloom, it’s not the most powerful thing in the world, but it’s a cool thing to have while leveling alts nonetheless.

Primal Storms Achievements

World Of Warcraft: Dragonflight - Primal Storms Guide (4)

There’s not all that much going on with Primal Storms in terms of achievements, but there are a few overarching ones:

  • Storming the Runway: collect a Primal Storms armor set.
  • Elemental Overload: loot 5,000 Elemental Overflow. Some milestone achievements are earned prior to collecting the 5,000 (i.e. for collecting 1,000 Elemental Overflow).
  • Stormed Off: kill eight of the eighteen rares that spawn during these events.

As for the other achievements, there is one for each zone, each of which requires four other achievements to be earned. Basically, you need to kill 200 enemies in each zone during each elemental Primal Storm. That totals 800 enemies per zone.

For example, to achieve Crashing Storms in Waking Shores, you need to earn:

  1. Thunderstorms in The Waking Shores: kill 200 enemies during storm Primal Storms.
  2. Snowstorms in The Waking Shores: kill 200 enemies during water Primal Storms.
  3. Firestorms in The Waking Shores: kill 200 enemies during fire Primal Storms.
  4. Sandstorms in The Waking Shores: kill 200 enemies during earth Primal Storms.

The same structure is applied to the other three zones. Once you’ve earned all the Crashing Storms achievements, you'll get the Storm Chaser achievement. There is no reward for this aside from Achievement Points.
